POST MEETING REPORT
10th Monthly Meeting 2009-10

27 Dec 2009

1.0 General.   TFP has a new chairman. This is news number one. The 10th Monthly Meeting started with recitation from Holy Quran and its meanings. Followed by the recitation, Secretary General (Secy) displayed the program for the evening, thus the proceedings started as per the format. In addition, the program of the day included:
a. Opening Note by the Secy. It concluded at the introduction of the new guests and the members.
b. Business of the Forum. The Business of the Forum this time was very significant, since we were to elect our Chairman for next two years.
c. Talk by the Speaker of the evening. The learned speaker for the evening was, Birg Asif Haroon Raja.

2.0. Recitation from Holy Quran.   Secy read out first five ayah mubaraka of sura Al-Mursalaat; the seventy-seventh sura. The different translations and brief commentary on these was read out from his book,                                     . Same has been made part of this PMR.

3.0. Opening Note by the Secretary.    The salient points of the Opening Note have been summarized as under: -
a. Heartiest and cordial welcome to all the honorable and learned guests and the members. It was on behalf of the Acting Chairman Col Riaz Jafri.
b. The efforts and the contributions of all the members were eulogized.
c. Secy said, “TFP is entering a new phase. For the first two years and a little more it was headed by Lt Gen Asad Durrani. Many a firsts had to be done, and completed in this time period. I will not cover those except one. It was establishing the custom and tradition of ‘one man one vote’. It is very difficult to follow, especially for those who rightfully carry extra weight of age, experience, social status and rank. All credit to our first Chairman, who believed and practiced it. To conclude the significance of equality of a man and his or her opinion I will draw your attention to a well established historical fact. Those who were in the immediate circle of all prophets of Islam were called, in their respective languages, sahabi, or helper, meaning thereby companions and not mureed or the followers”.
3.1. Introduction of the New Audience.   Honorable members and the guests, appearing for the first time, were requested to introduce themselves. Gist of the introduction summarized from their verbal brief is given below. I will request them to send in their detailed introduction. A guideline has been prepared to help write the introduction for TFP.
a. Mr. Wasim Haider Malik.  He is a young man, serving at CSD Headquarters as Manager Operations. Has well defined convictions and carries deep commitment to translate these into yield.
b. Maj Bashir Ahmad Khan.  He possesses a long meritorious service in khaki, and NLC to his credit. He has been part of the troops who fought in East Pakistan. His brief writings about current affairs have sharp edge. He is serving as Consultant/Manager Logistics in Mobilink.
c. Brig Asif Haroon Raja.  An outstanding officer with an action filled outstanding career. He is proud of his association with 4 FF and 35 FF; two battalions with stupendous record on the battle field against India, in 1965 and 1971 wars. An author of four books, he is currently busy with his fifth book. He is now a political and defence analyst; contributing with his writings. He writes exclusively for Asian Tribune, Pak Tribune, New Nation Bangladesh, Statesman and Veterans Today and Pakistan Observer.
d. Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Malik.  Born in village Bkhar Bar, Tehsil Shahpur, Distt Sargodha, Mr. Nawaz joined Islamia College Civil Lines, Lahore for his graduation and master degree. He did his MA in English Language and Literature in 1957. He topped civil service examination for Police Service. He became first IG of Islamabad, served as IG in Sindh, was Secretary Enforcement Commission, Member Accountability Commission and many more high profile appointments before retiring at the end of a good thirty-eight years long meritorious career.
e. Air Chief Marshall Kaleem Saadat.   ACM gave a very brief introduction. Here is a rather detailed one. The life of a service chief would be an icon for almost any class and group of high achievers. He was born in Lahore, got his initial education in Faisalabad and joined PAF Public School Sargodha in 1963.  He passed out in March 71 from PAF Academy Risalpur as a General Duty Pilot. Being a flying instructor in Turkey, Algeria; doing war course in France and to be Chief Instructor in National Defence College are some of the stepping stones in his high profile career. PAF, as we find it today owe a great deal to his vision and efforts.
3.2. Year 2010, Happy New Year.   New year dawned between our last meeting and this PMR. Before going over to the next subtopic, it is time to say Happy New Year. I framed a small message and sent over its abridged version to all the learned members of TFP as sms. May be it is news for some, that all are not using cell phones! Please find attached the New Year message.
4.0. Business of the Forum.   It had three parts.
4.1.  A word of thanks for Brig Noor and Col Riaz Qureshi.
4.2. The issue of sponsors for the newsletter, and
4.3. Elections for the Chairman. It was certainly most significant part of the ensuing two years. Air Cdre Zafar Iqbal Mir; proposed the name of ACM Kaleem Saadat, it was seconded by Brig Noor. The voting was done through raising of hand. In addition, to the proposer and one who seconded, following voted for ACM through show of hands; Col Riaz Jafri, Maj Bashir, Dr Mughal, Brig Zafar Alam. There was no contestant and neither there was any vote against the proposed name. Thus ACM Kaleem Saadat was elected as Chairman TFP Trust for the two years commencing January 2010. Congratulations ACM Kaleem Saadat.
5.0. Topic of the evening: Security Environments of Pakistan: A Purview. Brig Asif Haroon, the speaker for the evening made an elaborate, detailed and illustrated presentation.  The text has been made part of this PMR. It was part I. The subject would be concluded at the end of next meet when part II is delivered. The presentation was followed by detailed Q&A and extensive expression of varied opinions. I will cover here the names of those learned members who expressed themselves and their question or the opinion in brief.
5.1. Col Riaz Jafri and Brig Zafar Alam. Bengalis were maltreated as unequal, when we lived together. We were not fair. There was no social justice. Both of the learned members gave their personal experiences and observations.
5.2. Maj Bashir. There were many muslims in All India Congress, therefore Pakistan was not an exclusive option for all muslims.
5.3. Mr.Nawaz Malik.   West Pakistan was a feudal society, contrary to politically far more enlightened society of East Pakistan. Reforms suggested and Bills of equitable distribution of wealth and resources presented by parliamentarians from East Pakistan were considered as a threat to West Pakistani feudal lords, sitting in the Parliament. May be that was the beginning of break-up.
5.4. Dr. Mutaza Mughal.    Retracting our steps from the promised path of Pakistan ka Matlab Kia, La illah ha ill Allah; is the cause of our break-up. We broke our undertaking, we turned our back; Allah is angry with this people.
5.5. Gen Asad Durrani.   He had detailed scrutiny of the talk. Therefore there were no less than five questions.
a. India was divided by muslims so why are not the Indians justified in trying to undo Pakistan?
b. Both in 1965 and 1971 wars Afghanistan supported us. When America attacked Afghanistan we supported USA? What should we expect now?
e. After the invasion of Soviet Union (of Afghanistan) we became the frontline state in war against Soviets. Why, were we fighting someone else’s war?
f. If US had to leave Afghanistan, whom would they like to prefer to be their replacement?
g. Was not India the first love of USA? It was India which declined US block in the period of cold war and joined USSR.
6.0. Accounts. Statement of accounts is being sent to all those members who are contributing towards TFP. It also includes the Bank Statement, showing balance at year ending 31st December 2009.
